Message Minute (Your Part Matters)

“But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” 1 Corinthians 12:18

Paul does something almost funny in 1 Corinthians 12. He gives body parts feelings. A foot complains that it isn’t a hand, so it must not belong. An eye looks at a hand and says, “Don’t need you.” These little voices sound a lot like conversations that happen in church lobbies every week.

The foot represents self-pity. “Nobody notices me. Nobody asked me. Not gifted like them. Better to slip in late and leave early.” It can look like humility, but it’s really pride turned inside out. The eye represents the opposite: “Been here longest. Give the most. Know how things ought to be done.” Both voices share the same problem. The self is standing in front of a mirror, measuring and comparing.

Here’s what’s striking. Paul lets the foot, the ear, the eye, and the head all talk. But no body part ever claims to be the head. That role is already taken. Christ is the head of the body, the church (Colossians 1:18). Every power grab and quiet campaign to get our own way is really the self reaching for a seat that belongs to Jesus.

Then Paul says the parts that seem weaker are indispensable. Think about your liver. It filters, stores, and protects you every day, and it has never once been thanked. Every church has people like that, faithfully keeping things alive while nobody claps. God sees them. He goes out of His way to honor the unhonored.

A surrendered self doesn’t need to be seen. It just needs to be used. God placed you exactly where He wanted you. Your part matters.

Reflection: Do I lean more toward the foot’s self-pity or the eye’s pride? What gift has God given me that I have been holding back?

Prayer: Lord, I confess that I compare myself to others far too often. Sometimes I think I don’t matter, and sometimes I think I matter most. You are the head, not me. I surrender my need to be noticed. Show me my part in Your body and give me joy in playing it, seen or unseen. Amen.
