Message Minute (Love The Ones You Didn't Choose)

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 (NIV)

Friends are chosen. Family is not. The relative with strong opinions, the parent who never said what you needed to hear, the sibling you love but can only handle in small doses. These may be the truest test of self-giving love.

Jesus said something to His disciples that reframes all of it: they did not choose Him. He chose them. The same is true for you. He chose you knowing everything, including the parts no one else sees. So when you love someone you did not pick, you are doing exactly what Christ did for you.

That does not mean having no boundaries. It means having them without bitterness. You can honor a parent without agreeing with them. You can show up at the gathering and still leave at eight. You can say, "That really hurt me, and my hope is that we stay in each other's lives." Keeping the peace at any cost is not love. Often it is self-protection, a way of avoiding discomfort. Real love is willing to be uncomfortable for someone else's good.

Here is what makes it possible. When your worth is not riding on a family member's approval, you can walk into the holiday free. You are not there to collect anymore. You are there to give.

And if you feel like no one would show up for you, hear this. Before you ever called out, before you ever deserved it, Jesus laid down His life for you and called it friendship. He is the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.

So take two steps. Pick one family member you would not have chosen and do one small thing for them this week, with no scorecard. Then thank someone who has shown up for you. Don't leave a thank-you unsaid.

Reflection: Who in my family have I been keeping at a distance, and what small act of love could I offer with no expectation of a response?

Prayer: Jesus, You chose me before I ever chose You. Thank You for being my closest Friend. Take away my bitterness and my need for approval, and help me love my family freely, the way You love me. Amen.
