Message Minute (Anticipating Resistance)

"… the Holy Spirit tells me in city after city that jail and suffering lie ahead." - Acts 20:23

Following Jesus comes with predictable resistance. This isn't pessimism—it's realism. Paul received repeated warnings about the suffering ahead, yet he continued forward. Why? Because he understood that opposition often accompanies authentic faith.

Consider why many conversations avoid mentioning Jesus. It's not just cultural politeness or respect for differing beliefs. Often, there's an underlying awareness that speaking about Christ invites friction. The gospel challenges comfort zones, questions priorities, and calls for life transformation. That message doesn't always receive warm welcomes.

But here's the paradox: anticipating resistance doesn't mean avoiding it. Paul didn't change course when warned about suffering. Instead, he prepared himself mentally and spiritually for what lay ahead. The same Spirit who warned him also strengthened him. Knowing challenges will come allows for proper preparation rather than shocked retreat when difficulties arrive.

Reflection: What resistance or pushback have you encountered for following Christ, and how did you respond?

Prayer: God, prepare my heart for opposition without becoming cynical or defensive. When resistance comes, grant me the courage to stand firm in faith. May the awareness of challenges ahead strengthen resolve rather than create fear. Amen.
