Message Minute (Name the Water)

"After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua... get ready to cross the Jordan River."  Joshua 1:1-2

Before God ever says cross, a funeral happens. Moses is dead. The leader, the rhythm, the way things used to work, gone. That's true of nearly every new season. Something ends before something else begins. A role changes. A routine disappears. A version of life that used to make sense quietly closes its doors.

Most people rush past this part. There's pressure to walk into a new season smiling, grateful, already adjusted, especially when the new thing is good. But skipping the grief doesn't make the transition easier; it just makes it harder to name what's actually going on inside.

Naming the water simply means telling the truth: this is new, and something has ended to make room for it. That's not weakness or a lack of faith, it's honesty, and honesty is the only ground God ever builds anything on. Joshua told the people to consecrate themselves the night before the miracle. Not to have it together. Just to get quiet and honest enough to be ready. The order matters: the heart gets prepared first, and the amazing things follow. There's no shame in admitting a loss while stepping toward a promise. Both can be true at once, and God is not rattled by either one.

Reflection: What ending or loss have I not fully named, even though God already knows it's there?

Prayer: God, some things in my life have ended and I haven't let myself grieve them. I bring that honesty to You now; this is new, and I'm not fully sure of the way. Prepare my heart tonight for whatever You want to do tomorrow. Amen.
