Message Minute (Silence Is Not Absence)
"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority." (Acts 1:7, NIV)
The disciples wanted a timeline. Jesus gave them silence instead. No date, no countdown, just a command to wait without knowing how long. That kind of quiet is one of the hardest parts of any middle season. There's comfort in remembering the mountaintop and even meaning in the valley, but the long, flat stretch where heaven seems to have gone quiet doesn't get talked about much.
C.S. Lewis described this after losing his wife. In his grief, turning to God felt like knocking on a door only to hear it bolted shut from the inside. But later in his writing, he wondered if that silence wasn't God leaving at all. Maybe grief was breaking apart a small, tidy picture of God that needed to be broken, so something truer could take its place.
Holy Saturday captures this perfectly. Friday looked like the end. Sunday would be the greatest morning in history. But Saturday, the day in between, God said nothing. The disciples sat in a locked room with no word from heaven, not knowing resurrection was less than twenty-four hours away.
Quiet seasons can feel like abandonment, but they might be something else entirely: God clearing away a picture that was too small for what He's about to do. Silence is not the end of the story. It might just be a Saturday.
Reflection: When God feels distant right now, is it possible He's not absent, but tearing down a version of Him that's too small for what's coming?
Prayer: God, when the silence feels heavy, remind me that Sunday is still coming. Help me trust You even when I cannot hear You clearly. Amen.
