Message Minute (Learning to Read Your Desires)

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." — Ephesians 2:10

Not every desire is created equal. There's a difference between the craving for a quick escape and the soul-level longing underneath it. Recognizing that difference is where wisdom comes in.

Surface desires are often just wounds looking for relief — scrolling endlessly, overeating, chasing validation. But beneath those surface cravings is usually something truer and more worth listening to: a longing for rest, comfort, intimacy, or significance.

And beneath even those soul-level longings are what might be called spirit desires — the God-given callings that are uniquely wired into a person. These are the desires that persist. They don't go away with distraction. They make a person feel more like themselves, not less. They draw toward people rather than away from them. They align with God's character.

God prepared good works in advance for each person, specific things only that person can do. The desires He placed inside are often breadcrumbs pointing toward those prepared works. Chasing the surface desire leads to emptiness. Following the spirit desire leads home.

Reflection: Think of a persistent longing you carry. Ask "why" three times to get beneath the surface. What's the deeper desire underneath, and how might it connect to what God made you for?

Prayer: Father, help me to read my own heart with discernment. Show me the difference between cravings and callings. Lead me beneath the surface to the desires You placed in me from the beginning. Amen.
