Message Minute (Trouble Comes, But So Does Jesus)

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Somewhere along the way, many believers picked up the idea that following Jesus means sunny skies, rainbows, and butterflies. Pray enough, believe enough, serve enough, and life should run smoothly. But that is not the story the Bible tells.

Look at the apostle Paul. He was shipwrecked, bitten by a snake, stranded on an island, beaten, stoned, and slandered. Name almost any hardship and Paul faced it. Yet he never stopped following Jesus, and he never concluded that God had abandoned him. When Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about suffering, he wasn’t guessing. He was speaking from scars.

Jesus Himself never promised an easy road. He told His disciples plainly that trouble would come. G.K. Chesterton once observed that Jesus promised His followers three things: that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy, and in constant trouble. That sounds strange until it sinks in. Fearless, because God is with us. Happy, because our joy rests in Him, not in circumstances. And in trouble, because we live in a broken world that has not yet been made new.

This truth is freeing. When hardship hits, it does not mean faith has failed or that God is punishing you. A diagnosis, a loss, a closed door, or a long season of waiting is not proof that you’ve been forgotten. It is part of life in a fallen world; a world Jesus has already overcome.

So today, let go of the expectation that faithfulness guarantees comfort. Instead, hold onto the One who walks through the storm with you. Trouble may be certain, but so is His presence.

Reflection: Where have I quietly believed that following Jesus should keep me from hardship, and how has that belief shaped the way I respond to pain?

Prayer: Jesus, I confess I have wanted faith to be my shield against every hardship. Thank You for telling me the truth. When trouble comes, help me stay fearless because You are with me, and joyful because You have overcome the world. Amen.
