Message Minute (A Part, Not a Patron)

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27

“We’re church shopping.” “That one wasn’t for us.” Listen closely and that language sounds a lot like picking a streaming service. Good content, easy parking, the kids like it, so the subscription stays. But when the music changes or something asks too much, it’s on to the next one.

That instinct lives in all of us. The most natural question a human heart can ask is, “What’s in it for me?” It feels harmless, but it points to something deeper than a church problem. It’s a self problem: a self sitting at the center, measuring everything by how well it’s being served.

Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to a church that was a genuine mess. They were suing each other, splitting into fan clubs over favorite preachers, and letting the wealthy eat first while the poor went hungry. To that church, Paul didn’t say, “Find a better one.” He said, “You are the body of Christ.”

Notice the word he chose. Not patron. Not subscriber. Not a member who pays dues and uses the equipment. A part. A body part. A hand doesn’t consume the body. A hand serves the body, and when it stops, the whole body suffers, eventually including the hand.

Our culture says you find yourself by curating experiences that fit you best. Scripture flips that. You find yourself by being placed in a body and spending yourself for it. The way forward begins by handing the self back to Jesus, the One who gave Himself first so you could belong.

Reflection: Where have I treated church more like a subscription than a family, and what would it look like for me to start giving instead of only receiving?

Prayer: Jesus, I confess that I often come to church asking what I will get out of it. Forgive me for treating Your body like a service I can cancel. I hand my self back to You today. Make me a part, not a patron, and show me how to give myself away the way You gave Yourself for me. Amen.
