Message Minute (Let Somebody See The Real You)

"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." Matthew 26:38 (NIV)

Giving is only half of friendship. The other half is harder for many of us: you cannot be loved if you will not be known.

Jesus told His disciples they were no longer servants but friends, and He explained the difference. A servant gets instructions. A friend gets let in. Jesus shared with them everything He had learned from His Father.

Then He went even further. A few hours later, in a garden called Gethsemane, He told three of them that His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow and asked them to stay awake with Him. He did not say He was fine. He did not say He had it handled. The strongest person who ever lived let His friends see Him at His weakest.

Many of us have never done that. "How are you?" "Good, busy, you know how it is." That exchange can go on for twenty years, and then we wonder why no one really knows us. Without honesty, all we have are very long acquaintances.

The reason is understandable. Someone got past your defenses once and used what they found. Jesus understands that too. He opened up to twelve men. One betrayed Him and the rest ran. Yet He opened His heart anyway.

C.S. Lewis observed that a heart can be locked away where it will never be broken, but in that safe, dark place it slowly loses the ability to feel anything at all. Protection has a price.

A self surrendered to God can risk being seen. You are not managing a reputation anymore, because God is holding your identity. You do not have to be impressive. You get to be honest.

So the next time a friend asks how you are doing, tell them one true thing. Not your whole story. Just one honest sentence that opens the door.

Reflection: What is one true thing about how I am really doing that I have been hiding, and who is a safe person I could tell?

Prayer: Jesus, You let Your friends see Your sorrow. I confess that I hide behind "I'm fine." Heal the places where my trust was broken, and give me courage to let one person know the real me. Amen.
