Message Minute (Take Off The Robe)

"Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt." 1 Samuel 18:4 (NIV)

David had just defeated Goliath and become the most talked-about young man in Israel. Standing nearby was Jonathan, the king's son and heir to the throne. Jonathan was no sidekick. He was a proven war hero and next in line to rule. He also understood what David's arrival meant. He was watching his own replacement walk into the room.

What Jonathan did next is stunning. He took off his robe, his sword, his bow and his belt, and handed them to David. In the ancient world, a prince's robe was more than clothing. It was his office, the visible sign that the throne was his. Jonathan gave away the very things that made him who he was.

Years later, when David was hiding in the wilderness and ready to quit, Jonathan went and found him. He did not go to negotiate. He went to encourage the man who would take his place.

Everyone has a robe. It is the thing you would have to set down to truly celebrate someone else. Your position. Your reputation. Being the successful one, the funny one, the one who has it all together. Here is how to spot it: your robe is whatever makes it hard to be happy for the friend who just received the very thing you have been praying for.

Jealousy is love with the robe still on. But when your identity rests safely in God's hands, you can clap for the person who passed you. Jonathan could give away the crown because he knew he was not the crown.

So think of one person who has something you wanted. This week, call them or look them in the eye and celebrate it. It will cost you something. That is the point.

Reflection: What is the robe I hold on to most tightly, and who do I struggle to celebrate because of it?

Prayer: Father, my identity is safe in Your hands, not in my position or reputation. Free me from jealousy and comparison. Help me genuinely celebrate the people around me, even when they receive what I wanted. Amen.
