Message Minute (Love Shows Up)

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." John 15:13 (NIV)

Ever spotted a friend across the grocery store and quietly ducked down another aisle? Not out of dislike. There just wasn't enough time or energy for a five-minute conversation. Most people have done it, and it says something about the moment we live in.

We have more connections than any generation in history and fewer real friends than our grandparents had. Phones are full of contacts. Group chats run for years. Yet loneliness has become so common that health experts call it an epidemic, one that harms the body as much as the heart.

Friendships rarely end with a fight. They fade. A text goes unanswered for a few days, then a few weeks, and soon calling feels awkward. Something that took years to build quietly runs out of oxygen while everyone is busy being tired. Friends are not so much lost as neglected.

Into that reality, Jesus speaks. On the night before the cross, with hours left and so much He could have said, He talked about friendship. He called laying down your life for a friend the greatest love there is. The relationship our culture treats as optional, Jesus placed at the very top.

That turns things upside down. Love is not proven by warm feelings or good intentions. Love shows up. It answers the text. It makes the call that feels overdue. It walks toward the person instead of down the other aisle.

The good news is that a fading friendship is not a finished one. Often all it takes is one person willing to go first. Today, let that person be you. Reach out to someone who has drifted to the edges of your life, and trust God with what happens next.

Reflection: Which friendship in my life has been quietly fading, and what is one way I can show up for that person this week?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for showing up for me. Forgive me for the friendships I have let fade through busyness. Bring one person to my mind today and give me the courage to reach out first. Amen.
