Message Minute (Sharpen Them in the Ordinary)

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV)

Nobody applauds the ordinary. A big recital gets photos and cheers. Putting the phone in another room at dinner so a child has full attention? No one notices. But heaven does.

The most famous parenting passage in the Old Testament is set in surprisingly plain places: sitting at home, walking the road, lying down, getting up. The Hebrew word for "impress" means to sharpen, like drawing a blade across a whetstone again and again. It is used elsewhere for sharpening arrows, and Psalm 127 calls children arrows in the hands of a warrior.

Notice the order in the passage. God's words go on the parent's heart first, then get passed on. Nobody can hand down a faith they do not have.

It is easy to assume faith gets passed on mostly at church. Church is a gift, but kids are there an hour or two a week. The kitchen table, the car line, the ride home from practice, the bedtime routine: that is where the real sharpening happens.

The biggest enemy of those moments is hurry. Arrows cannot be sharpened in a rush; that is how someone gets hurt. Slow, patient, repeated passes do the work. A better program or parenting book will not fix it, but a slower pace just might.

Kids will forget most lectures. They will not forget the way a parent looked at them while they talked. Every "tell me about your day" followed by real listening is another pass across the stone. This week, pick one ordinary window, set the phone aside, and simply be present.

Reflect: Which everyday moment in my week could God use to shape a child if I slowed down?

Pray: God, forgive me for rushing past the moments that matter most. Fill my heart with Your Word so it overflows into ordinary conversations, and help me be fully present with the people You have given me. Amen.
