Message Minute (Nourish, Don't Grip)

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4 (NIV)

A gentle hold protects. A tight grip crushes.

Paul gives parents two instructions here. First, do not exasperate children, or push them toward anger. Then, bring them up in the Lord. The phrase "bring them up" comes from a word Paul used only one other time, describing how people naturally nourish their own bodies. Nobody makes their stomach earn lunch. When the body is hungry, it gets fed. When it is tired, it rests. Children are meant to be nourished the same way.

The reformer John Calvin described this as letting children be fondly cherished: tenderness, warmth, and affection, balanced with loving correction when it is needed.

So what exasperates a child fastest? A parent leading from fear. Hovering, controlling, rescuing from every hard thing. Research has linked over-controlling parenting to higher depression and lower life satisfaction in college students, likely because those kids never discovered they were capable. Involvement is not the problem. Control is. And fear only grips what it is afraid of losing.

Here is the good news. There is a Father in heaven who has never once hovered out of fear, because He is not afraid of anything. He looks at every weary parent, messy track record and all, and fondly cherishes them. Resting in that love loosens the grip, because nothing already safe in the Father's hands can be lost.

Before correcting a child this week, pause and ask what they really need. Then speak one sentence of pure encouragement over them, with no "but" attached.

Reflect: What fear is behind the way I hold on too tightly, and what would trusting God with it look like?

Pray: Lord, You have never parented me out of fear. You cherish me. Loosen my grip on the people I love, replace my anxious control with Your peace, and help me nourish them the way You nourish me. Amen.
