Message Minute (They Were Never Yours)

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him." Psalm 127:3 (NIV)

Ever lost sight of a child in a store? Three minutes feels like three hours. Now imagine three days. After the Passover festival, Mary and Joseph traveled a full day toward home before realizing twelve-year-old Jesus was not with them. When they finally found Him in the temple courts, Mary asked what any parent would ask: why have You treated us like this? Jesus calmly answered that He had to be in His Father's house.

Even the parents of the only perfect child in history had to learn a hard lesson. Their Son belonged to His Father first.

Psalm 127 calls children a heritage from the Lord. That word was used for the land God gave the tribes of Israel. Families lived on it, worked it, and cared for it, but they could never sell it. The deed stayed in God's name.

The same is true for every child. People say "my kids" the same way they say "my car" or "my phone." But children are not possessions, résumés to polish, or trophies to display. They are entrusted gifts, and parents are stewards with a homework and bedtime routine.

This changes everything about pressure. When a child's grades become a parent's worth, or their choices become a parent's reputation, a weight lands on young shoulders that was never theirs to carry. The next time frustration or panic rises, pause and ask one honest question: is this for them, or for me? Then pray their names back to God, the One who held them first.

Reflect: Where have I acted more like an owner than a steward with the children in my life?

Pray: Father, thank You for the children You have placed in my life. They were Yours before they were ever mine. Forgive me for the times I made them about me, and help me care for them as Your treasures. Amen.
