Message Minute (The Lower Place)

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." Philippians 2:3

Few ideas cut against culture more sharply than choosing the lower position. The world teaches us to protect our rights, win the argument, and make sure nobody takes advantage. Jesus showed another way. The night before the cross, He wrapped a towel around His waist and washed the feet of friends who were about to abandon Him.

Paul opens his teaching on marriage in Ephesians 5 with a verse many people skip: "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." Before a single word to husbands or wives, both are placed on their knees before Jesus. In a Roman world where husbands held nearly absolute power, Paul told them to lay their lives down. The passage was never meant to push anyone down. It lifts everyone up.

Still, humility is not the same as disappearing. Surrender belongs to God alone. What flows toward other people is self-giving, not self-erasing. Sometimes love looks like telling the truth, holding a boundary, or calling a counselor.

Here is why that matters. A drowning person cannot rescue another drowning person; both go under. But someone standing on solid ground can reach into deep water again and again without being pulled in. When our identity rests secure in God's hands, we are finally free to serve others from strength instead of fear. That is the kind of love God longs to grow in every home.

So the lower place is not a place of weakness or shame. It is where Jesus chose to stand, and it is the safest place to love from.

Reflection: Is my sense of worth resting on God or on how others treat me, and where is He inviting me to serve from solid ground?

Prayer: Father, I want to love like Jesus, who knelt with a towel and basin. Humble my pride where I need to win. Heal the places where I have lost myself trying to please others. Anchor my identity in You so I can serve freely and love from strength. Amen.
