Message Minute (Handed Over)

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Ephesians 5:25

When Paul tells husbands to love their wives the way Christ loved the church, he uses a striking phrase: "gave himself up." In the original Greek, it is a single word, paredoken {par-eh-DOH-ken}. It means to hand over, to deliver someone into another's power, to release control over whatever happens next.

The Gospel writers use that same word for Judas handing Jesus over to the chief priests, and for Pilate handing Him over to be crucified. Paul uses it in Romans 8:32 for God the Father giving up His Son for us all. At the cross, everyone was handing Jesus over. Some did it out of greed, some out of cowardice, and One did it out of limitless love.

Jesus took the verb of betrayal and turned it into the verb of love. What Judas did for thirty pieces of silver, Jesus did for His bride for free.
Notice what happened next. Christ did not find the church holy and radiant and then decide she was worth dying for. He gave Himself first, and His giving is what made her shine. The giving came first. The beauty came second.

That truth reaches far beyond marriage. Criticism rarely makes anyone better, and constant correction usually makes people smaller. But love that pours itself out, with no strings and no scorecard, draws out the best in others. People become more fully themselves when they are loved like that.

Every relationship holds the same invitation: stop trying to fix people and start handing ourselves over for their good.

Reflection: Am I more likely to critique the people closest to me or pour into them, and how might my love help someone flourish?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You handed Yourself over for me when I had nothing to offer You. Teach me to let go of control and give myself for the good of the people I love. Where I have tried to fix others, help me pour into them instead, trusting You to bring out their beauty. Amen.
