Message Minute (Love That Goes First)

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

Waiting is one of the most common strategies in any relationship. Waiting for an apology before offering kindness. Waiting to be noticed before noticing. Waiting for the other person to change first. It feels fair, but it keeps two people stuck, each one standing still until the other moves.

Sometimes giving comes with strings attached in a quieter way. A kind act gets done, and then comes the watching. Did they notice? Will they match it? It is a little like a street performer waiting for a coin to drop in the hat. That is not really love. It is an investment strategy, and investors pull their money out the moment the returns look bad.

God never related to us that way. John 3:16 tells us God so loved the world that He gave. He did not wait for humanity to clean up, apologize, or prove worthy. Christ died for us while we were still sinners, still running our own tally against Him, with zero guarantee of how we would respond. He went first.

That is the pattern for every relationship that follows Jesus. Love is not a reward handed out after someone earns it. It is a gift offered before they deserve it. Going first can feel risky, even foolish. Yet this is exactly how grace entered the world, and it is how grace still enters homes, friendships, and marriages today.

Anyone waiting on someone else to make the first move might be the very person God is inviting to move.

Reflection: Who in my life am I waiting on to go first, and what is one small step I could take toward them today?

Prayer: Jesus, You loved me first, long before I gave You a reason to. Thank You for going first when I was still keeping score against You. Give me courage to stop waiting on others and to take the first step in love, even with no promise of anything in return. Amen.
