Message Minute (Losing Life to Find It)

"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it." — Mark 8:35

This single sentence appears in all four Gospels, a rare kind of repetition that should make anyone pay closer attention. The word translated "life" here refers to the soul, the innermost self, the part of a person that makes decisions, holds grudges, and chases approval. Jesus isn't offering a vague spiritual suggestion. He's naming the exact thing every relationship struggles with: a self that insists on staying in control.

Surrender sounds like defeat to modern ears, but Jesus frames it as rescue. Holding tightly to a bruised, self-managed life only exhausts a person further. Letting that same life fall into trustworthy hands is what finally sets it free. This isn't about becoming less of a person. It's about no longer being the one responsible for holding everything together.

Think of a shattered piece of pottery. Throwing it away isn't the answer, and neither is displaying it broken and pretending it's fine. The wise move is placing it in the hands of a skilled restorer. That's the invitation here. The very thing being surrendered isn't being erased, it's being restored by hands strong enough to hold it well.
