Message Minute (Gradually, Then Suddenly)

"For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven." – Ecclesiastes 3:1

There's an old observation about how change tends to happen: gradually, then suddenly. Nothing seems to move for a long stretch of time, and then everything shifts all at once. Most people love the suddenly. The breakthrough, the answered prayer, the moment everything clicks into place. Almost nobody loves the gradually. The slow, quiet, uneventful middle where nothing looks like it's working.

But here's what's easy to miss: the gradually is not evidence that God has gone silent. It's the process happening underground, out of sight, before it ever breaks the surface. A river doesn't carve a canyon overnight. Roots don't reach water in a single afternoon. Growth that lasts almost always includes a season that looks like nothing is happening at all.

God has always worked this way, and He still does. He was in the "suddenly" business yesterday, He's in it today, and He'll be in it tomorrow. But the suddenly usually has a gradually attached to it that came first. What we need to ask ourselves is: what's actually happening when what's happening seems like nothing. Is trust growing in the waiting? Is faith deepening in the delay? The gradually isn't wasted time. It's often the exact place God is doing His deepest work.

Reflection: In what area of my life have I mistaken a "gradually" season for God's absence, when He might actually be preparing something for later?

Prayer: God, help me trust You in the slow seasons, not just the sudden ones. When nothing seems to be changing, remind me that You are still working. Grow my patience and my faith while I wait for what's ahead. Amen.
