Message Minute (Letting Go of What Was)

"But forget all that – it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland." – Isaiah 43:18-19 (NLT)

There's a strange comfort in replaying the past. The old hurt, the failed attempt, the season that didn't turn out the way it was supposed to. It becomes familiar territory, even when it's painful. But God's word through Isaiah is direct: stop rehearsing what's behind. The former things, good or bad, aren't where His work is happening now.

This doesn't mean the past gets erased or forgotten. It means it no longer gets to define what today or tomorrow looks like. God is doing something new, and new things require open eyes, not eyes locked on the rearview mirror. Notice the question He asks: not "do you remember" but "do you not see it." That's the real challenge. It's possible to be so busy holding onto yesterday that today's new thing goes completely unnoticed.

A wilderness and a desert are the last places anyone expects a road or a river to appear. That's the point. God's new things rarely show up where they're expected. They show up in the places that look most empty, most stuck, most unlikely. Letting go of the former things creates room to actually see what God is already springing forth.

Reflection: What "former thing" have I been holding onto that might be blocking my ability to see what God is doing right now?

Prayer: Lord, show me where I've been living in the past instead of the present. Help me release what's behind so I can perceive what You're doing right in front of me. Give me eyes to see the new thing, even if it's springing up in an unlikely place. Amen.
