Message Minute (The Only Way Up Is Down)

"Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." — John 12:24

Instinct says to protect what's valuable. Keep it safe, keep it whole, keep it on a shelf. But Jesus described a strange law of the Kingdom: a seed that stays protected and untouched never becomes anything more than what it already is. It's the seed willing to be buried, to crack open and seemingly disappear, that produces a harvest.

This wasn't just a lesson about agriculture. Jesus said it the week He was heading toward the cross, describing exactly what was about to happen to Him. What looked like the ultimate loss, a death, a burial, an ending, turned out to be the doorway to resurrection and a harvest still being gathered today.

Every transition carries some version of this pattern. An old way of living has to end before a new one can take root. A comfortable identity may need to be laid down. That loss can feel like waste, like something is simply gone. But in God's economy, nothing surrendered to Him is wasted. It's planted.

The dying isn't the tragedy blocking a new season. It's the very mechanism that makes the new season possible.

Reflection: Is there something from an old season that still feels like a loss rather than a seed? What might it look like to trust that it's been planted rather than discarded?

Prayer: Father, some of what I've let go of still feels like dirt, not seed. Help me trust that You don't waste what's surrendered to You. Grow something good from what has died in me. Amen.
