Message Minute (Turning Toward the Field)
"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14
Picture a runner at full sprint, whole body leaned out over the finish line, every muscle straining forward. That's the image Paul chooses here. Nobody wins a race looking over their shoulder; the glance backward is what slows the stride and causes the stumble.
"Forgetting" doesn't mean amnesia. Paul remembers his story in vivid detail; he had just told it a few verses earlier. Biblical forgetting means the past no longer gets a vote in the future. It means the old season stops setting the ceiling on what God is allowed to do next.
There's an old story about how monkeys were once trapped in certain parts of the world. A heavy jar with a narrow neck would be baited with something desirable. The monkey would reach in, grab a fistful, and then discover the closed fist couldn't fit back through the opening. The animal was completely free, nothing held it except its own refusal to let go of what it had grabbed. It would rather stay stuck than open its hand.
That image lands close to home. So often the thing standing between a person and what God has next isn't circumstance, it's a closed fist around something already gone. The invitation this week isn't to forget the past ever happened, but to stop letting it hold the future hostage.
Reflection: In what area of life has the past been quietly casting a vote it shouldn't get anymore? What is the "jar" I keep reaching back into instead of running forward?
Prayer: Father, my grip has been tighter than I realized. Loosen my hold on what's behind me and help me lean forward into what You have next for me. I don't want the past to have the final vote. Amen.
