Message Minute (Saying Goodbye Like Jesus)

"Do not let your hearts be troubled... I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am."  John 14:1-3

The night before His death, Jesus sat in an upper room with the twelve men He had spent three years doing life with, and He knew He was leaving. He didn't deny it. He didn't make it dramatic. He simply did it well, and the pattern He left behind is worth studying.

First, He tended to the ones being left before tending to His own fear: "Do not let your hearts be troubled." Second, He told the truth about the departure, no pretending He was staying. Third, He gave the leaving purpose: He was going to prepare a place for them. And fourth, He anchored the whole goodbye in a promise of reunion.

In that culture, a groom would leave his bride-to-be to build an addition onto his father's house, then return for her when it was ready. Every person in that room heard wedding language. Jesus wasn't just leaving. He was the Groom preparing a home, promising to come back.

Compare that to how most goodbyes actually happen. Some slip out the side door of a season and call silence strength. Some cling so tightly they make the ending painful for everyone. Some just pretend nothing is changing until the change arrives and flattens them. Jesus modeled something different: honest, tender, and full of hope. That kind of goodbye is available in any ending, big or small.

Reflection: Out of the three patterns (ghosting the ending, clinging too hard, or denying it altogether), which one sounds the most like me? How would it change things if I practiced saying goodbye the way Jesus did?

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to say goodbye the way You did, honest, tender, and full of hope. Help me tend to the people around me instead of only managing my own fear of the ending. I trust Your promise of what's ahead. Amen.
