Message Minute (Let the Worst Season Qualify You)

"For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ."  2 Corinthians 1:5

There's a difference between sympathy and empathy, and most people feel it instantly. Well-meaning words land like "thinking of you" or "everything happens for a reason" which are appreciated, but they don't always land deep. Then someone walks in who has actually been there, not read about it, not heard a podcast on it, but lived it and survived it, and something shifts. Their presence carries weight sympathy alone can't offer.

That's the fellowship of suffering Paul describes. Jesus is described as a High Priest who sympathizes fully because He's been in the chair. Betrayed by people close to Him. Begging His Father, in agony, to change the plan. Walking into a future He didn't want. There's no waiting room where He shows up and says, "Nothing for this one."

A University of Michigan study followed 423 older couples for five years, researching what helps people live longer: receiving support or giving it. Those who regularly gave support to others turned out to be more than twice as protected against early death as those who only received it. Giving, it turns out, adds life.

That means pain that's been walked through isn't wasted, it becomes qualification. Nobody with a smooth, untouched life can sit down next to someone in crisis and truly understand. But someone who has carried the same weight can. That's not coincidence. It's training.

Reflection: What season of my life, once painful, might now be exactly what qualifies me to help someone else? Have I been burying that experience, or leveraging it?

Prayer: Lord, thank You that Jesus fully understands my pain because He lived through suffering too. Show me how the hardest parts of my story can become someone else's help. Give me courage to leverage what I've walked through instead of hiding it. Amen.
