Message Minute (The Math Before the Feeling)

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." - James 1:2-3

Bad news rarely waits for a good moment. It shows up mid-morning, mid-marriage, mid-career, and demands an answer before there's time to prepare one. The instinct is to file it under loss immediately. James offers a different first move.

The word "consider" that he uses in verse 2, is an accounting term. It means to reckon, to run the numbers again before assuming the total is final. This doesn't mean pretending pain feels good. It means refusing to close the books on a hard season before all the figures are in. Something might still be growing underneath what looks, right now, like nothing but damage.

A recent trial probably came without warning. A diagnosis, a phone call, a conversation that changed everything. The temptation is to mark it "total loss" on day one. But faith gets to ask a harder question: what if this isn't finished being written yet?

Reflection: What's one hard thing happening in my life right now? Have I already marked it as a total loss before all the numbers are in?

Prayer: God, this season feels heavier than it looks. Help me stop writing this off before its full story is told. Give me the patience to wait for the whole picture. Amen.
