Message Minute (Thankful for the Fleas)

"Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:18

In 1944, sisters Corrie and Betsie ten Boom were sent to Ravensbrück, a Nazi concentration camp, for the crime of hiding Jews inside their home. Their barracks, built for four hundred people, held nearly fourteen hundred. On their very first night there, straw bedding turned out to be swarming with fleas. Corrie despaired, but Betsie began thanking God for everything happening around them, the overcrowding, the smuggled Bible, and eventually even the fleas themselves.

Corrie thought her sister had lost her mind. Yet months later, the reason became clear. Guards refused to step foot inside their barracks because of the fleas, which meant nightly Bible studies continued undisturbed for months, packed with women hearing Scripture in several languages. What seemed like the worst detail of an already terrible situation turned out to be the very thing protecting something sacred.

Gratitude offered before understanding arrives, often becomes the doorway to seeing what God is doing behind the scenes.

Reflection: Name one small, irritating detail from today, something that seems pointless or annoying. Try thanking God for it right now, before any explanation makes sense.

Prayer: Father, gratitude for hard and confusing things doesn't come naturally to me, yet Your Word invites it anyway. Grow thankfulness in my heart even for small annoyances that make no sense yet. Help me trust that unseen good may be forming through what feels pointless in my life right now. In Jesus' name, amen.
