Message Minute (The Volume Gets Turned Up)

"Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail." – Lamentations 3:21-22

The holidays don't create emotions—they reveal what's already there. Like turning up the volume on a song that's been playing quietly all year, this season amplifies the envy, anger, shame, or depression we've been managing. Before gathering around tables and opening gifts, it's worth checking what's actually inside our hearts.

Jeremiah wrote Lamentations from a literal pit—sunk up to his armpits in mud, having lost everything. Yet even there, he made a defiant choice: "Yet this I call to mind." That phrase matters. Hope didn't just show up naturally. He had to deliberately place it there. He preached truth to himself when feelings screamed otherwise.

The same choice is available this season. Whatever emotion is getting louder, it's pointing to something deeper. Pay attention to it. Don't ignore the warning lights on the dashboard of your soul.

Reflection: What emotion feels louder as the holidays approach? What might it be revealing about your heart?

Prayer: God, help us be honest about what we're feeling this season. Give us courage to look beneath the surface and find what needs Your healing touch. Teach us to preach truth to ourselves when emotions threaten to overwhelm us.
