Message Minute (Courage in the Presence of Fear)

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:29-30

Mary was terrified. The text says she was "greatly troubled," and the angel had to tell her, "Do not be afraid." She wasn't fearless—she was faithful despite her fear.

True courage isn't the absence of fear; it's obedience in the presence of fear. Mary had legitimate concerns about social rejection, family disgrace, and an impossible responsibility. But faith isn't recklessness—it's acting courageously with wisdom in response to God's clear direction.

Mary asked clarifying questions. She sought confirmation from Elizabeth. She weighed this call against Scripture's promises. She demonstrated that we can be afraid AND faithful, ask questions AND obey, seek wisdom AND take risks.

The decision to obey often transforms fear into confidence. Once Mary said yes, she wasn't paralyzed anymore. She traveled to see Elizabeth, sang a song of praise, and handled each challenge with grace. Readiness came through action, not before it.

Waiting to feel ready is often a mistake. Confidence develops through obedience, not contemplation.

Reflect: What fear has been keeping you from obeying God's call? How might taking the first step of obedience reduce that fear?

Pray: God, thank You that courage isn't being fearless—it's trusting You despite my fears. Help me take the next step even when afraid, knowing You'll meet me there. Amen.
